Think You Have Bed Bugs?
A List Of Do's and Don'ts
No one wants to deal with a bed bug infestation. This problem can be annoying, frustrating, and even a little scary to deal with. Unfortunately, bed bugs are all too common. It is estimated that one in five North Americans have dealt with bed bug infestations in their own home or know someone else who has. That makes it especially important to recognize the issue - and avoid making mistakes that could exacerbate the problem. Need a little help? These do's and don'ts will help keep your home safe.
Do: Get In Touch With a Professional
Do you suspect there are bed bugs in your home? Then you have probably noticed itchy red bites on your skin. That makes the first do on your list to get in touch with an experienced professional. You want to call a professional bed bug exterminator as soon as you think there could be a problem. Don't wait it out. A professional will be able to inspect your home for an infestation and come up with an appropriate plan of action. Stop putting it off and make that call!
Don't: Stay At Someone Else's Home
You've discovered bed bugs are inside your home. The last thing you want is to continue sleeping in the same bed, right? This is totally understandable. However, if you start sleeping on the living room couch or another bed in the house, you increase the risk of the infestation spreading. This makes it harder to get rid of the bed bugs once and for all. The same goes if you choose to stay at someone else's home. Rather than protecting yourself from bed bugs, you are increasing the chances of spreading the infestation to a friend or family member. Your best bet is to stay at your home during the removal process and sleep in your bed as normal.
Do: Wash All Of Your Linens
One of the biggest chores during the removal process has to be the linens. Absolutely everything will need to be cleaned and disinfected. Realistically, this is going to take you a decent amount of time. So, get started early. Wash all of your clothes, bedding, towels, and so on in hot water and dry them on hot. You could alternatively get them dry-cleaned - but keep in mind that this can be costly. Once you have washed and dried the linens, store them in an airtight bag until the infestation is completely dealt with.
Don't: Try Dealing With The Problem On Your Own
Bed bugs are not easy to get rid of. It has been found that dealing with this type of infestation is more problematic than dealing with cockroaches and ants combined. That means you should never try to deal with the problem on your own. Often, homeowners think they can use a bunch of chemicals and products to eliminate the infestation. In some instance this may do the trick. Not with bed bugs! You may unwittingly wind up making it harder for a professional to handle it. So, forget DIY solutions and harsh chemicals. Always let the exterminators take care of the exterminating.
Bed bugs are a common problem and can be tricky to remove properly. With this list of dos and don'ts at your disposal, you can breathe a little easier.... and make sure the extermination process goes as smoothly as possible.
